WNM Investigates Wagner Helicopter Scene in Voronezh

On 24 June, Telegram channel “Baza” (@bazabazon) carried a post on a helicopter incident that occurred in Voronezh that morning. Wagner group fighters claimed that they shot down several helicopters that resisted the convoy, but they did not specify the location or any other details. Numerous videos captured the moment of one of the helicopters being shot. Shortly after, the oil depot in Voronezh exploded. The helicopter dodged the shot by firing flares. Another helicopter followed the trajectory later. Following are the infographic results of the geospatial analysis of the content.

Later that day, Telegram channels published video of explosion at an apartment complex in Voronezh. Several vehicles were damaged but no injuries were reported, according to the video caption.

Text of the post: “There was an explosion in the parking lot of the Ozerki housing estate on the outskirts of Voronezh. A rocket fell there, reports RT.

“The video was shared in local Telegram groups.

“There was no official information about the accident and no casualties.”

Location of the video is 51°38’58.71″N, 39°18’48.62″E.

The fire of the explosion can be seen around the 6-second mark of the video, so presumably it happened around 00:06:00 timecode, however, the sound reaches the camera at 00:10:00 and 00:10:04. There are two sound picks at the moment, so an average of 00:10:02 is taken. The origin of the second explosion sound is unclear.

The speed of sound is 343 m/s that allows to measure the distance between the point the video was taken to the point of the explosion. 343*4.2 = 1440 meters. The oil warehouse is just this distance away. At the same time, a video showing the Wagner vehicles, a helicopter, and the sounds of explosion became viral in the Telegram channels:

The video was taken at 51°39’37.67″N, 39°18’4.05″E. The helicopter was going at the direction of the oil depot explosion seen at the previous video.

Thus, the shell that fell in the apartment complex most likely belonged to the Wagner group that tried to shoot down the helicopter. It is likely that the attempts to shoot down the helicopter were also the reason why the oil depot in Voronezh caught fire, which poses a great danger to the population of the city. It was also possible to find out the locations of the collision with the helicopters, which may lead to confirmation of the facts of the Wagner confrontation with the presumably aviation of the Ministry of Defense.
